Resources

The following pages discuss resources available to Martel students, provided by campus wide and Martel specific organizations. Below are some links to some useful campus resources.

Calendar

The Martel Prime Minister’s Calendar holds info for Martel events and other dates important for students, like Registrar’s deadlines.

Martel Mentors

The Martel Mentors are a student academic help service; they provide free tutoring and homework help for Martel students, in addition to holding review sessions for popular classes in the weeks leading up to finals.

Lectures

Every once in a while, Martel will be host to a faculty lecture. These lectures are generally hosted by the Mentors, as a part of the Martel-Hanszen Lecture Series, which hosts a lecture in each semester (one at Hanszen and one at Martel). Click here to read about past lectures and see what’s coming up.

Course Help

The Mentors provide help with a number of classes in different departments, and often host review sessions for popular classes before finals to help Martel students in their preparations. Click here to find which Mentors can help you out with your classes and see what review sessions are coming up.

Peer Academic Advisors (PAAs)

Peer Academic Advisors (PAAs) are students trained by the Office of Academic Advising on the nuances of Rice’s system. They know the General Announcements cover-to-cover, so these are the people to go to if you’ve got a question about graduation requirements.

Student Computing Consultants (SCCs)

Student Computing Consultants (SCCs) are Martel students who are employed by Rice Information Technology (IT) specifically to help you. They can help you with setting up your computer, getting onto Rice networks, and are a good resource if you’re having problems the night before your big paper is due.

Health Reps

The Health Reps are students who have resources on health, and also get a kit of medicine to give out to sick students who can’t or don’t want to go to Student Health Services. This program is in the middle of a reorganization, so we’ll have more info when that’s complete…

Student Maintenance Representative (SMR)

The Student Maintenance Representative (SMR) is Martel’s official liaison with Housing & Dining (H&D). He’s in charge of things like testing the fire alarms (and buying pizza for us when he does), helping people loft their beds, room check-out (and check-in), and turning on the lights in the Quad when you want to play mud soccer at midnight.

Center for Student Professional Development (CSPD)

There are PDAs (professional development advisors) for each college, each with scheduled weekly office hours to help you out. If you need help perfecting that resume, editing your cover letter, or learning about upcoming workshops or recruiting events, we are here for you. Check out the CSPD website for more information (cspd.rice.edu). You can also contact the CSPD team at the O?Connor House to talk to one of the staff members about your professional development.

Intramural Sports (IMS)

The Rice Rec Center organizes a number of Intramural Sports (IMS) leagues for students to play in. Some of these leagues are IM leagues(students organize their own teams with whomever they please) and some are College leagues(each College organizes its own team). Generally, each sport plays twice a year, with an IM league in one semester and a College league in the other. Click here for more info about IM Sports at Martel.
