Committees

Commmittees are the lifeblood of Martel. We’ve got a number of Committees (”Constitutional Committees,” officially), that take care of a lot of behind-the-scenes work for many of the events you’ll go to, in addition to maintaining and improving our facilities and just generally making Martel awesomer.

Associates

Stephanie Hernandez & Johanna Horn

The Associates Committee here at Martel is devoted to creating and developing relationships between current Martelians and non-Martelian adults. These non-Martelians come in three flavors: Rice staff members, Rice faculty, and community associates. These three flavors also include Martel alumni in each category. These associates are a resource, socially, academically, personally, spiritually, and every other “-ally” that you can imagine. They come to lunches often, and they love to talk to undergrads, so don’t be afraid to talk to them; that’s what they’re there for!

Environmental

Mike Lytle & Raul Villareal

We at the Environmental Committee are all about making Rice an environmentally friendly campus starting with recycling and conservation at our very own college. Join us throughout the year in our green initiatives and in kicking the other college’s butts at events such as RECYCLE-Mania. Look out for our Milkshake Sunday events where we give out free milkshakes to the biggest recyclers. Save the Rainforests!

Historian/Photographer

Justyna Brewczyk, Amelia Min-Venditti & Katie Ortbahn

According to Wikipedia, a historian is an “individual who studies and writes about history, and is regarded as an authorityon it.” And because Wikipedia defines it as such, it is the duty of the Martel Historian to document, understand, and become an authority on the events at Martel. This includes, but is not limited to: collecting photographs, recording themes of College Nights, Beer Bike, Associates’ Night, etc., election results, and collecting and maintaining a history of Parliament. So important, right?

Improvements & Properties

Kevin Tray & Jaclyn Youngblood

We all enjoy being a part of Martel — and why shouldn’t we? We are the best college at Rice and have the sundeck to prove it. The Improvements Committee is an avenue that any Martelian can go through to suggest projects, brainstorm ideas, or simply talk with other Martelians about ways to improve the already kick-ass college in which we live.

Innies

Chris Gray & Selim Sheikh

The Innies Committee organizes on-campus events, such as Saturday dinners, movie nights, and study breaks, to further strengthen the cohesiveness between all Martelians through the celebration of cultural diversity.

Outies

Rhae Adams & Jake Keller

The Outies Committee is charged with organizing Martel events outside of the hedges. These activities can include broomball, a fall camping trip, or lazer tag……you get the idea. The Outies also keep you up to date with events going on around Houston through e-mails and an updated calendar.

Senior

Kendall Hollis & Will Vogelgesang

Emily Pyle & Veronica Torres

Mission Statement: We are a dynamic community of leaders that continually involves Martel College in the myriad of service opportunities within Rice University and the Houston area.

Spirit

Maggie Andersen & Emma Stockdale

The Spirit Committee graces Martel with college-spirited paraphernalia, as well as extreme enthusiasm for every holiday under the sun (including your birthday!). We’re basically here to make sure your Martelian/Greek blood runs maroon and baby blue, through and through.

Sports

Iggy Olivera & Aubrey Sansing

The sports committee encourages participation in intramural sports and passes along information about promotions for supporting Rice varsity sports…

Technology

Rodrigo Flores & Pedro Silva

Theatre

Fahad Punjwani & George Romar

Since its inception, the Martel College Theatre Committee has sponsored quality theatrical productions and other events for the enjoyment of the residents of Martel College, Rice University, and members of the wider community. The productions vary widely in genre, and are known for attracting the creative abilities of students from all colleges – except Jones, of course. The Theatre Committee warmly invites you to partake of this enriching tradition, and experience Martel theatre for yourself.
