Right now, this page is populated with questions that aren’t so much “frequently asked” as things that we expect people new to Rice might want to know. So, for the time being, these questions apply almost exclusively to incoming freshmen. That’s not to say that they aren’t simple truths about the world (and Rice), but they’ll be most helpful to incoming Martelians.

Questions Incoming Students Ask
- Why aren’t there very many questions here?
- Because this resource was just added, actually. We didn’t have an FAQ on our previous site, so we didn’t really have much to go on. And it’s surprisingly hard to remember what questions you had two or three years ago. (And surprisingly hard to get people to tell you what would’ve been useful for them.) So please let us know if you have a question that should go up here somewhere…
- How am I going to wash my clothes?
- Martel has a spiffy laundry room with 9 HE washing machines. So make sure you buy HE detergent. You don’t want your clothes to end up exploding all over the floor in a flood of suds. We’ve also got 12 stack dryers for your convenience.
- Where can I buy things in Houston?
- There are a lot of stores in Houston. The most popular place for Rice students is probably the Target on Main St, which sells most of the knick-knacks you might need, in addition to groceries, movies, shampoo — you get the idea. If you’re looking for more specialized things, there’s an IKEA out on I-10, a Container Store by the Galleria, and a Costco on Richmond.
Questions Students Ask
- I’m an upperclassman. When do I get to move in?
- Upperclassmen (meaning anyone who’s not involved in OWeek at Martel) get to move in on the Saturday before classes begin. This year, that’s August 22. (And it might be important for you to know that the campus is dry until noon on that day.)
